With a snow removal team of just 2 employees, the Town efficiently clears approximately 5 miles of streets across town. The Town incorporates one plow and a plow mounted mower to remove snow from sidewalks.
Roan Creek Road and 45.5 Road are plowed by Mesa County. State-managed highways I-70 and both frontage roads are plowed by the Colorado Department of Transportation. All other streets within Town limits are plowed by the Town‚ team, which is called to action when there is sufficient snowfall or icy conditions. Plowing along priority routes typically begins between 4 and 7 a.m. Drivers make a first pass along each route, and then make additional passes as needed if snowfall continues throughout the day.
Priority routes include access to the school on Minter Avenue, downtown streets and Fourth and Fifth streets accessing Town. Second street providing access to the energy resource areas west of town is also a first priority
While many communities do not plow residential streets or prioritize them last, the Town attempts to keep residential streets clear of snow and ice. Plows must push snow to the roadway edge, which may cause a ridge of snow to be deposited at private driveways. The Town‚ snow removal team cannot clear private driveways. Residents who are unable to clear their own driveways are encouraged to contact local private contractors who provide this service. All residences and downtown business owners are responsible for clearing sidewalks in front of their properties. By law, snow removed from any sidewalk or driveway may not be deposited into the roadway. Doing so can create dangerous conditions for drivers.
